His experience of more than 30 years as a pioneer in the technological field ensures the project the highest level of connectivity, control and security.

The Project

Ocean Electric has been developing for more than 10 years an architecture of floating devices that move with the waves of the sea. The movement is transmitted to mechanical motors, which activate electrical generators, thus closing the magic circle of harnessing marine energy. It is a scalable architecture, designed both for off-shore applications and for mass energy production, with substantially greater potential than other renewable energy technologies, such as solar or wind.

The Ocean Electric project began 20 years ago under the name Hidroflot, led by Ricard Prats, an engineer, navigator and entrepreneur from Barcelona.

What began as a visionary initiative evolved as the world got prepared for this new energy revolution. For many years, marine energy technology could not be implemented massively due to its high costs and development times. Countries were not decisively committed to it and the future of this technology was left in the hands of companies and private investors... But that was not enough.

Ocean Electric was there from the beginning, developing and testing prototypes, improving the technology, investing in their dream. And thanks to this, it is more prepared than ever at this time, when Europe and the world have seen the need to help R&D from the public sector. The  opportunity for the definitive deployment of this energy has begun and will continue strongly in the coming years.

Ocean Electric is prepared to lead the next energy revolution, hand in hand with countries and companies that are willing, like us, to be at the forefront of this new era.

  • Awards and Honours

Ocean Electric's initiative has won several international awards and recognitions throughout its history. Among them, the following stand out:

    • Honorable mention at the VI Barcelona Engineering Projects Congress

    • Gold medal at the "Fem Indústria" awards for companies with future

    • Silver medal in "Salon des Inventions de Genève"

    • Certificatión by Germanischer Lloyd as semi-submerged platform.

Wave Energy

How is wave energy generated? Let's explain it in the simplest way possible to make it understandable without getting too technical

When sea waves move, they cause vertical movement in the water. Our technology is capable of following this movement, using floats or buoys, and transferring it to a rotating motor, which in turn sends it to an electric generator. With this, we are generating electricity which we call wave energy.

Ocean Electric technology has achieved the key to take advantage of this movement and generate clean, continuous and inexhaustible electrical energy

  • How does it work?

Waves are produced by wind, which in turn is generated by pressure and temperature changes caused by sun radiation. The effect of the wind on the sea surface causes waves that impact the water molecules. These do not move along with the wave, but rather make circular movements around them and transmit their energy to neighbouring molecules. In areas far enough from the coast, without interference from the sea floor itself, this movement is predominantly vertical. That is, at a given point the water moves mainly up and down, with greatest intensity at the surface and decreasing rapidly with depth.

Ocean Electric's semi-submerged platform is centered on the waterline of the buoys, which move freely thanks to the high difference in buoyancy with respect to the structure that houses them. The movement of the buoys is sent through a transmission system to a one-way rotating motor, which is connected to a dynamo-type generator, which converts this rotation into electrical energy. This energy is collected and converted to medium AC voltage, ready to power any electrical system.

  • Why wave energy?

Ocean might be the most powerful existing source of renewable energy (and is yet to be exploited!). The main characteristics of this energy are:

    • Water is 800 times denser than air, which means its potential to generate energy is much greater.

    • The sea produces energy continuously, unlike solar energy which is only produced during the day, or wind energy which needs enough wind. The sea is always moving

    • The behavior of the sea is predictable, the intensity of the waves in a specific area is always known in advance.
